You think one would fit in my bathtub?
I think manatees are the best. They are so ugly that they're adorable. I wouldn't mind keeping one if I had the room. You think it'd like the bathtub? I mean they aren't suppose to move about much if they are healing? I could help the wounded recover. :)

A quote from a February 2006 Florida newspaper article.
"You wouldn't believe what happened. I was enjoying my swim with the manatee when suddenly he barrel rolled. With a squeal, wink and a smile he exposed his belly and an unexpected appendage. He was the most well-endowed male I have ever witnessed. I felt like an unwilling participant entangled in a mating ritual. Considering he outweighed me by 600 pounds, I was not about to stick around to discover his true intentions. I'm just so thankful I wasn't skinny-dipping!"

Damn, I'm gonna find me a nice, well-hung manatee to copulate with. These human males just aren't doing it for me anymore.

manatees can love
A few weeks ago my flatmate Fi(ona) told me that a friend of her friend was killed by a manatee. Apparently this guy was in the water near some manatees and one of the manatees rammed him repeatedly into some rocks. According to one of the manatee experts, this manatee had just lost its mate (poor baby!). I'm a little fuzzy on the details of this seemingly outrageous story, and I will report back later with more clarity.

Hey
Hey, I just joined and wanted to say hi. I'm a total Manatee (and elephant) lover [they're related, you know ;)]. I'm going to adopt one from the Save the Manatee foundation, too. Really soon. :)

Manatee song
My friend the__baroness loves manatees. She's not a musician, but she loves manatees so much she made a little song. I think it's an absolutly wonderful song. I never much thought or cared about manatees before, but since listening to the song I'm kinda liking them. Anyway, she'd be embarrased to know I was posting this song here, but whatever. I figure you guys may dig it. So click here if you wanna hear it.

Etymology & Taxonomy
The beloved Manatee:
Kingdom- Animalia
Phylum- Chordata
Class- Mammalia
Order- (get this) Sirenia
Family- Trichechidae
Genus- Trichechus
blah blah blah...
Now. Did you get the Order? Sirenia! Most assuredly a nod to the Greek sea nymphs who lure sailors to their deaths with their lovely songs. How unfortunate and ultimate an irony it is that these wonderous beings ultimately meet their own demise when sailors sail too close in their curiosities for such a magnificent creature such as this. I wonder what the chorus of a sea cow ballad is?

share your manatee memories
hey peeps,
I thought it might be interesting for us all to recall our first memories of manatees. I used to subscribe to a lot of trashy magazines when I was growing up, e.g. seventeen, teen, ym, etc. At the back of these magazines there are several pages of advertisements that are completely irrelevant to the subject matter of the magazines themselves. I remember seeing a small ad for savethemanatee.org. Having an environmentalist bent, I checked it out, and ended up adopting a manatee from the site. His name is Merlin. That year I also adopted a grizzly bear and three badgers from England but I always loved Merlin the manatee the best. Two years ago I got a free manatee christmas stocking. Soon I will renew my subscription so I can get the free manatee t-shirt which is extremely ugly, but appealing nonetheless. I could go on to speak of Swedish and I's personal relationship with the plight of manatees (and the origin of this community's userinfo) but I'm a bit knackered at the moment. I, or Swedish, will discuss it in the near future.
So...Please Share Your Memories of Manatees. I am interested in how manatee information is disseminated in our culture.

The evil manatee killer represents propellers, of course, and the careless and cruel people who allow such travesties.
